INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL BIOLOGY STUDENTS IN ORUMBA NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ANAMBRA STATE

ABSTRACT

The paper examined the influence of social networking on the academic achievement of senior secondary school biology students in Orumba North L.G.A in Anambra State. four research questions were raised on and one null hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance was formulated. Simple random sampling was used to select 7 schools from the 13 public schools in Orumba North that have SS2 students. The population was made up of 560 Biology SS2 students in Orumba North L.G.A in Anambra State. The questionnaire was used for data collection. The data was analysized using mean, standard deviation and z-test. The findings of the study revealed among others that students use facebook and Whatsapp in a high extent. The various reasons students use social networking sites are for online learning, watching movies, assignment, leisure, private messaging, uploading pictures and profile, and finding friends. The negative influences include: distraction while studying in class, addiction to social networks. It makes them reluctant and late to classes. Recommendations were made based on the research findings.
