PRACTICE AND FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH INDISCRIMINATE SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL AMONG RESIDENTS OF GAMAWA TOWN OF BAUCHI STATE

ABSTRACT

The term solid waste is all-inclusive and encompasses the heterogenous mass of throw-away from residential and commercial activities as well as the more homogeneous accumulation of a single industrial activity. The aim of the study is to assess the awareness and practice of solid waste disposals among residents of Gamawa town in Bachi State. The study utilizes descriptive cross sectional survey study. The target population comprises of all resident of Gamawa town in Bauchi State. Stratified sampling techniques were used in this study. The results consist of 10.1% within the age range of 21-25years, 51.3% within 26-30years and 21.5% within 36-40years with mean and standard deviation of 30.5 ± 4.69. More so, 63.4% were males and 36.6% were females, 49.5% were married, 28% single and 10.6% were divorced. Also 39.4% attended secondary school, 37.9% had tertiary education and 11.9% had Quranic education. 48.5% uses private companies as the major service providers for solid waste disposals while 43.9% accepted that budgetary constraint is the major factors in effective solid waste disposals. The study concluded that there are couples of factors mitigating effective solid waste disposals in Gamawa town of Bauchi State and poor practices is responsible for indiscriminate solid waste disposals among residents of Gamawa Town in Bauchi state.
