FACTORS AFFECTING TEACHING AND LEARNING OF BIOLOGY IN ALVAN IKOKU FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, OWERRI

ABSTRACT

The study investigated factors affecting teaching and learning of biology in Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri. To guide the study, four research questions were raised in accordance with the purpose of the study. Descriptive survey research design was employed. Population of the study consisted of five hundred and twenty three (523) biology students and twenty three (23) teachers. Sample size of two hundred and twenty three respondents was randomly selected. A validated structured questionnaire with mean X was used for analysis. From the findings, it was revealed that factors such as teachers’ competence, facilities, motivation of teachers and training of teachers have influence on teaching and learning of biology. Based on the above findings, the researcher recommended that school administrators should ensure prompt payment of teachers’ salaries appreciate staff performance and expose teachers to learn new things.
